They are both whole, they are both young, and alive. And a tear may fall-just one- for Gilliam who isn't here, Grey can run his hands down Rat's front, the body much like his own.

Rat can feel it, a little, in Grey's throat as if the sound wants to come out. It almost makes him hold his breath, moving faster into their joined hands.

When he spills between their joined hands, into the water, there is a moment of boneless bliss that passes across Grey's face. A brief moment when all that matters is this.

The look on his face is like a painting that Rat could memorize. He watches him, eyes hungry for every detail as he jerks against him, giving in to his own pleasure and kissing Grey as he comes.

He hangs tightly to him, as if they can shield each other.

Thin, strong arms around thin, strong bodies. It is only now that the water feels almost cold. Grey's eyelids are heavy, though and he doesn't want to move just yet. Kisses are ghosted over Rat's face.

Rat shifts a little forward, nudging them into the shallowest part, but doesn't hurry out of the water. Getting out means having to, at least briefly, separate from Grey's touch. It's not a compromise he's ready to make.

All he wants, for the moment, is to keep kissing him.

That is most welcome on Grey's part, too, as he returns kisses both light and deep. And when he does finally urge Rat to shore it is to lie on soft grass and he rolls to face the other boy. No water to hide them now; he has, now, nothing to hide: his dusky skin, the scars and words, the temporary limpness between his legs. He reaches for Rat again, not willing to give up touch.

Fumbling, Rat grabs his superfiber cloth, offering it as a blanket to cover them both. He's still careful to keep his front to Grey, where a similarly lean shape highlights several light whorls of scar tissue in his shoulder, torso, and leg where bullets have met flesh.

There are other scars too, from knives and fights and falls, all if then earned and taken as lessons. All of them there for Grey to see.

Perhaps it was the way Gilliam raised Grey, perhaps it was the nature of the tail of the train, but it doesn't occur to Grey to judge anything he sees. People are what they are, in his experience. Rat is a sum of his parts and much more than that.

Under the cover of the cloth, he lies on his belly, resting his cheek on his arms. He smiles just a little.

It's not the first time he's slept outside, but it's a lot pleasanter doing it with company. Without thinking, he sneaks out a hand and cups Grey's cheek, thumb sweeping over the curve of his lips.

Still by habit, Grey, though, kisses that thumb, suckles it just a bit. How he learned to do that, to do other things he hasn't yet shown Rat is another story for another time.

It draws a sigh out of him. This is more closeness than he's allowed himself for a long time. It feels good in a way entirely separate from the physical pleasure, drowsy and safe. He's only felt like this once before, four years ago.

Smiling, he winds his fingers into Grey's hair.

It's a comforting touch, too, and Grey settles into it, settles into the night. He reaches for Rat's free hand to lace their fingers together. They will stay, just like this, yes? Until morning?

Rat nods, knowing the question without the assistance of the words on Grey's skin. It's instinctive, telling him to stay close and enjoy this while he can.

Used to sleeping in the loud and cramped train, it's easy for Grey, like this, to fall asleep like this, warm and comfortable and as relaxed as he gets. He curls, Rat's hand cupped to his cheek.

He sleeps well, enjoying the feeling of Grey's heartbeat against his. For once, his dreams aren't troubled by bad memories, letting him sleep until the sun rises.

When he wakes, it's still curled against Grey.

He still wakes with the sun because the sun was still new enough that the brightness warms his eyelids. He blinks hs eyes open and looks around, stretching as his eyes settles on Rat. He gives an almost shy smile.

Rat's smile is soft, uncharacteristically open in the fondness that's growing for him. It's more than he should have allowed himself. Maybe he'll chide himself later.

Today though, he leans forward to kiss the shy smile.

That is a wonderful way to start any day. Combined with the sun, the smell of the grass, Grey leans into that kiss to deepen it, reaching for Rat under the cover of the cloth.

Rat nods once, giving permission if it's asked, before relaxing into the kiss. The sun is warm on them where it sneaks through the trees and he feels truly safe for once.

He wants to stay here.

There is no place else either of them need to be. Soon, perhaps, they will forage for food. But until then, they can be lazy. Is there any more luxury than that? Surely not.

They are young boys, too, despite all they have been through, and Grey grins as he springs over Rat on all fours, pinning him playfully.

It's not a luxury Rat's often been able to enjoy, which akes it all the more a treat. Pned to his back, Rat's muscles tense and he falls back on his strength to push back, struggling playfully to steal a kiss.

They are truly well-matched with rapid-fire instincts. And even though Grey doesn't want to deny the kisses, they will, in this game, earn them. He leans to the side, dodging, rolling on his shoulder to a crouch, still grinning, still daring.

Rat doesn't dare challenge this as somehow unfair. He rises to his feet, grinning as well as he tenses waiting to see what Grey will do.

After a silent moment, Grey darts forward for Rat's chin, for a kiss. He's already more than half-hard.

When Grey darts toward him, Rat closes his arms around the other boy and falls back into the grass, holding him tight in his grip.
